Choosing a good domain name
The best domain names are usually simple.
Ideally, your domain should be easy to remember, easy to spell and closely connected with your business or brand.
For a New Zealand business, a `.co.nz` or `.nz` address is often a natural choice, although other domain extensions can make sense depending on the business and its audience.
If the obvious name isn't available, we'll help you consider sensible alternatives rather than settling for something unnecessarily long or complicated.
A domain containing words related to your service or location can make its purpose immediately obvious to people — but owning a keyword-rich domain isn't a shortcut to the top of Google.
Search visibility depends much more on the quality and relevance of the website itself, its content, reputation and how well it serves the people searching.
Choose a domain because it makes sense for your business and your customers, not because someone has promised that the right combination of keywords will guarantee Google rankings.
More than one domain?
There are legitimate reasons for a business to own several domain names.
You may want to protect variations of your business name, retain an old domain after a rebrand or use another memorable address in advertising.
Additional domains don't necessarily need additional websites. In many cases, the appropriate solution is simply to redirect them to the most relevant page of your main website.
We'll help make sure they're set up in a way that makes sense for both visitors and search engines.
Already own your domain?
That's fine.
You don't need to transfer ownership of a domain to Blueflowers just because we're designing or hosting your website.
If you'd prefer to keep the domain with your existing registrar, we can work with that arrangement and help configure the DNS records needed for your website and email.
If you'd rather have us manage the domain alongside your hosting, we can help with that too.
A domain name is only one piece of the setup.
Behind the scenes, DNS records determine where your website is hosted and which systems handle your email. They can also include records that help receiving mail systems verify legitimate messages sent from your domain.
We can configure and maintain these settings as part of the website and hosting services we provide.
You don't need to understand all the acronyms — we'll take care of the technical details.
Changing web designers or hosting companies shouldn't mean losing your domain name.
If you're moving an existing website to Blueflowers, we can help identify where your domain is currently registered and what needs to change.
Likewise, if your business changes name or moves to a new domain, we'll make sure the old website addresses are handled appropriately so visitors — and search engines — aren't unnecessarily sent to dead pages.
